I use the thing almost exclusively for reading DC voltage drops and temperatures. Current and more elaborate automotive stuff is not my thing. For my purposes the unit is probably an overkill, but the price is low so why not. Voltages are read fine. It takes some time for the reading to stabilize; I think that is because of the autoranging, but once again for my purposes it doesn’t matter. Temperature readings taken with a third party immersible probe appear to be reasonably accurate; thermostats that I’ve tested opened just when they were supposed to, and coolant temperatures taken by the OBD coolant sensor and by the probe are within 5 degrees.
I bought INNOVA 3100 about 2 weeks ago because my MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) was on. Plugged it in after reading the manual. It said Oxygen Sensor Bank 1 Heater was bad. Called Mitsubishi dealer: Cost of part $317.43 plus 30 minutes of shop time. Looked up a replacement on internet at a cost of $37 plus $10 for a special socket to remove and replace. Another $7 for a Sears crimping tool and I replaced the part and saved over $228 plus I have the INNOVA to use over and over again.
After looking at scanners for several years, I finally decided to buy this one because it seemed to have the most usable features (including live data, graphing, recording, etc.) and also had the unique “Code Connect” feature for reporting the most likely fixes that work for specific makes and models based on a large reported & verified repair database. I was not disappointed. So far, the “top reported fixes” for the detected trouble codes and vehicle model have been the ones which really worked on my own car and on friends’ cars that I repaired. Although some reviewers claim that the Code Connect may not work well for certain car models which had very limited production numbers, it worked well for my repairs which included a Toyota Echo which was not a very common model.

This is the first scanner I’ve ever owned, and I found it to be easy to use and easy to understand. When I had a question I emailed their tech support and got a reply that even I could understand within an hour. In addition to our late-model car, I used it to check an older model (1985 Ford Ranger) equipped with OBD1, and the accompanying adaptor worked perfectly. I’m very happy with this product.
Got my 3100 a while back, and it pretty much paid for itself every time I used it. I was able to repair some inexpensive sensors, and not be at the mercy of the auto dealer or independent mechanics (who seem to be as expensive as the dealers anymore). When I started having ABS problems, the 3100 could not read ABS codes. So I sold it to my brother and upgraded to the 3150. He has only foreign cars, so there is no inexpensive code reader (as far as I have been able to figure out) that could read his ABS.
I’ve been working on cars a while now and I’ve used a few of these type of code readers/scanners (Snap-on and Mac) and I’ve found that this one does almost everything you would expect a pro model to do and a price that can’t be beat. Shows everything you really need to know, the screen is very large and easy to read, the button layout is good, but can be confusing at first, there should have been an extra button or two as some of the controls do double or triple duty, you have to read the manual and have it on hand until you get used to the controls. I’ve used it right away to diagnose a problem in my late model truck and have plugged it in to a number of makes and models with great success.
I was not looking for a high-end tool, with battery-backed up memory and an internal list of code descriptions. Ideally, I will seldom use this tool, and using the manual (or even better, the company’s website) to look up codes works fine for me. So I have to write down the code on a piece of paper, and take that to my computer, rather than the unit remembering it for me. Plus, no batteries to go dead while the tool sits in my toolbox.
I did appreciate the extra indicators on the LCD display, and the Green/Yellow/Red LEDs for quickly checking the status of the system. Other inexpensive code readers have a single line of text displayed, with very little else, and you need to scroll around to get information. With the Equus 3030, icons are displayed to indicate which tests have run, or have not returned good status. Also, a count of codes, pending status, and the status of the check engine light are all displayed along with the code itself.
hey guys, im a gm technician and i got this scanner to keep in my tool box for when other makes of cars come in and i’ve now used it on 3 different vehicles and ive gotta tell you, this is probably the best scan tool i’ve used with the exception of professional grade tools from snap-on or mac that can cost 10 thousand or more. this is definately the right choice for anyone who needs a good tool for pulling codes.
I was tired of the cheap OBD readers and wanted something much better. I also wanted something I could read the ABS system with. The Innova 3160 does the trick. It is easy to use and understand. I like the way it prompts you in order to get what you are looking for. It has an excellent screen with the exact information you need to make repairs. It is obvious that they consulted with a repair tech when they designed it. I haven’t tried to up-date it from the computer as yet, but it has all the necessary items and information with it to do so.
